Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the NBA Summer League match.
The NBA Summer League in Las Vegas kicks off with a compelling fixture between the Minnesota Timberwolves and the New Orleans Pelicans. In last year’s corresponding game, the Timberwolves came out on top with an 81:74 victory. During the 2024/25 regular season, they won two of their three encounters with the New Orleans Pelicans. However, the Summer League’s unique format and its reliance on young, developing talent often diminish the significance of regular season records, giving less-established teams a chance to shine.
Minnesota Timberwolves
The Minnesota Timberwolves head into the Summer League after an impressive playoff campaign, though none of their key players will feature in the current squad. Much of the attention will focus on rookie Joan Beringer, selected 17th overall in the draft. The team’s roster shows a degree of continuity, with three players having logged minutes in the main rotation: Terrence Shannon, who featured in 32 games last season, Rob Dillingham (49), and Leonard Miller (30 appearances over two years).
New Orleans Pelicans
The New Orleans Pelicans suffered a disappointing campaign, finishing second from bottom in the Western Conference. On a more positive note, they managed to acquire one of the most highly anticipated rookies in the draft — Jeremiah Fears, who is expected to make an immediate impact. The squad selected guard Fears out of Oklahoma with the 7th overall pick, followed by centre Derik Queen from the Maryland Terrapins at 13th, and Micah Peavy from the Georgetown Hoyas at 40th. The current Summer League roster features several exciting prospects and looks well-prepared for the challenge.
Minnesota Timberwolves vs New Orleans Pelicans Prediction
The New Orleans Pelicans have both the depth and mindset to stay competitive in this matchup. They are likely to keep the game close and avoid a defeat by more than seven points.
