Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the WTA Madrid match.
Before being eliminated by Aryna Sabalenka in the fourth round of the 2025 Australian Open, Mirra Andreeva overcame Magdalena Frech in a three-set contest (6:2, 1:6, 6:2). That encounter was their first head-to-head meeting. Now, they are set to clash once again.
Mirra Andreeva
Mirra Andreeva had the clear edge in that match, as shown by the two sets she comfortably secured. However, the lopsided second set loss (1:6) was no fluke. Magdalena Frech opted to play from deep behind the baseline, adopting a counter-punching strategy that relied on Andreeva’s inconsistency. This was reflected in the winner tally — 35 to 12 in favour of Andreeva — as well as the unforced errors, where the 17-year-old committed significantly more (45 compared to 31). The disparity was especially stark in the second set: 19 to 7.
Magdalena Frech
To capitalise this time, Mirra Andreeva will need to draw Magdalena Frech closer to the net more often, even though net play isn't a natural strength for her opponent. In her second-round match in Madrid, this tactic proved effective: a combination of drop shots and net approaches enabled her to beat Marie Bouzkova (6:3, 6:4), despite serving seven double faults (compared to just two from Marie Bouzkova). Magdalena Frech, by contrast, had to put in a much more demanding shift to reach the third round. Her opponent Jessica Bouzas Maneiro pushed her to the limit in a nearly three-hour three-set battle (5:7, 7:6, 6:4).
Mirra Andreeva vs Magdalena Frech Prediction
Such an extended match — unusually long for the women’s tour — may still weigh on Magdalena Frech, even with a rest day in between. Given that, there's reason to expect Mirra Andreeva to win with a significant cushion in at least one of the sets.
