Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Ligue 1 match.
Montpellier’s recent domestic success has given them a real chance of escaping the relegation zone. However, they face a tough test against Lens, who are also desperate for points as they push for a top-six finish.
Montpellier
Back-to-back 2:1 wins over Monaco and Toulouse have lifted Montpellier off the bottom of the table for the first time in a while. During these matches, they generated 3.55 xG and scored four goals, making them the most effective attack in this period alongside AS Monaco. However, their defensive issues remain a major concern—over 19 matches, Montpellier have conceded 41.69 xGA, the second-worst defensive record in Ligue 1.
Lens
Lens followed up their entertaining clashes with Le Havre (2:1) and Paris Saint-Germain (1:2) by securing a more controlled 1:0 victory against Angers, relying on a counter-attacking approach. Away from home, they have been one of the best teams in Ligue 1, earning 16 points on the road—a tally only bettered by PSG (21) and Marseille (24). Lens also rank high in expected goals (32.93 xG), highlighting their ability to create chances.
Montpellier vs Lens Prediction
Montpellier have not beaten Lens since April 2022, recording three draws and three losses in their last six meetings. They lost 2:0 away to Lens in December, but their current attacking form suggests they will create opportunities. However, given their poor defensive record, Lens will also have chances to score.
