Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the ATP Wimbledon match.
Márton Fucsovics
Fucsovics came through a five-set marathon in the opening round, edging past the unseeded Aleksandar Kovacevic (No. 73) 6:3, 6:7, 6:1, 5:7, 6:4. But the American didn’t offer much resistance, and the Hungarian often gave points away far too easily: he finished with 36 unforced errors and seven double faults. Against a more composed or technically refined opponent, that would almost certainly have cost him the match.
Gaël Monfils
Monfils’ showdown with Humbert lasted a full four hours (6:4, 3:6, 6:7, 7:5, 6:2), but the Frenchman rolled back the years with a vintage display. He fired down 28 aces, won 27% of return games, and maintained an excellent balance for an attacking player — 43 unforced errors to a whopping 70 winners. So far this season, Monfils has been clinical against players ranked outside the top 100, winning all four such matches and dropping just one set in the process.
Márton Fucsovics vs Gaël Monfils Prediction
Bookmakers have made the Hungarian a slight favourite, but Monfils’ experience and thunderous serve give him a distinct edge here. Fucsovics doesn’t appear to have the tools to handle the Frenchman’s power and court coverage.
