Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Women's Volleyball Nations League match.
Both the Netherlands and Japan struggled at the Olympic Games. However, Japan impressed in the previous Women's Nations League campaign, progressing all the way to the final. They now look to reinforce their credentials as favourites against the Netherlands, currently ranked ninth in the world.
Netherlands (women)
The Netherlands are going through a poor run of form. Last season, they failed to reach the Nations League playoffs and lost all three of their matches at the Olympics. Although they managed to take two sets from Turkey (ranked 4th), they were then swept by Italy (ranked 1st) and fell to the Dominican Republic (ranked 11th). Notably, five of those matches extended beyond three sets.
Japan (women)
Japan enjoyed an impressive campaign in the most recent Women's Nations League, reaching the final with playoff wins over China (ranked 5th) and Brazil (ranked 2nd). They are known for their high-tempo starts, having won the opening set in four of their last six matches. Despite a disappointing Olympic showing – with losses to Poland and Brazil – Japan remain one of the most tactically sound and well-drilled teams in international volleyball. However, they are not without their flaws: seven of their last 15 Nations League matches have featured more than three sets.
Netherlands (women) vs Japan (women) Prediction
Japan look like the stronger squad when compared to the Netherlands. Their previous Nations League campaign showed they can hold their own against top-tier opposition. The Netherlands have been underwhelming of late, but their head-to-head record against Japan is encouraging. They are expected to take at least one set.
