Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the MLB playoff match.
The New York Mets and the Philadelphia Phillies swapped thrilling comebacks in the opening games of the series. In game one (6:2), the Mets made a spectacular rally in the eighth inning, while in the next, the Phillies scored all seven runs (7:6) from the sixth to the ninth innings. The next clash in this series is set to take place at Citi Field on Tuesday night.
New York Mets
The Mets are set to enjoy fervent support and a packed stadium. The last sell-out at Citi Field for a home playoff game was two years ago. Last week, the team provided their fans with some surprising and unforgettable moments on the road. Highlights included a heroic performance against the Atlanta Braves (8:7) and a last-inning comeback over the Milwaukee Brewers (4:2). Now, the fanbase finally has a chance to show their gratitude.
The Mets are the most spirited team in these playoffs. In the previous round against the Milwaukee Brewers' elite defence, they scored 15 runs in three games. Sean Manaea started in one of those games, impressively allowing only two runs in five innings. At the end of July, he made some adjustments to his delivery, drawing inspiration from Chris Sale. The results speak for themselves: in his last 12 starts, he boasts a 3.09 ERA with just two losses.
Philadelphia Phillies
The Phillies were one of the best teams in the regular season, but it's important to note that most of their victories came at home. Away from home, they have been mediocre: 41 wins against 40 losses. This trend has continued in the playoffs as well. The team has lost five of their last six elimination games since the 2022 World Series.
Additionally, there are concerns about starter Aaron Nola's ability to shut down the opponent's top hitters. In his last start against the Mets in mid-September, he allowed six runs over four innings. Pete Alonso, one of the New York Mets' standout performers in these playoffs, has hit 16 times with 5 home runs in 50 at-bats against Aaron Nola.
New York Mets vs Philadelphia Phillies Prediction
The Philadelphia Phillies have struggled in away games. Citi Field, which holds just under 42,000 fans, is already expected to be filled to capacity. Hence, the New York Mets will have noise support akin to a home NHL playoff game. We're backing the hosts to win.
