Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Rugby Championship match.
Eden Park in Auckland again proved a difficult venue for New Zealand’s opponents, with South Africa beaten (17:24). Can South Africa seize the initiative at Sky Stadium in Wellington?
New Zealand
New Zealand drew on home support in the first meeting. Eden Park is traditionally a tough venue for any opponent, not only South Africa. At times last week they were short of their usual standards. The statistics were broadly even, but the key moments were decisive: the visitors allowed too much space, and their tackle completion still lagged at 81% to 87%.
South Africa
Head coach Rassie Erasmus selected Siya Kolisi, but the captain still needed support and left the field in the 51st minute. Even without him, and with the replacements on, the squad still scored two tries, yet it was not enough to catch New Zealand. Discipline was an issue too, with a yellow card (10 minutes in the sin bin). Several players disappointed Rassie Erasmus, so the starting XV will include fly-half Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, who only came on after half-time in the first match, and full-back Aphelele Fassi, who was not in the matchday squad.
New Zealand vs South Africa Prediction
New Zealand’s changes are mostly injury-enforced, as Scott Robertson is broadly satisfied with his squad. The notable switch is former sevens star Leroy Carter starting on the wing. We expect a quicker tempo from both sides, so we will avoid the match result market. A high-scoring game appeals, and we will take Total Over 45.5 points.
