Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the English Premier League match.
Both clubs played in the League Cup on Wednesday and advanced relatively smoothly through their opponents, although Newcastle United's challenge was notably tougher. So why are their chances of victory rated almost half of those of Arsenal?
Newcastle United
Much of this is due to how Newcastle United have struggled through their recent five-match stretch with no wins and only two draws. Admittedly, the opponents have been formidable. They faced a stubborn Fulham at Craven Cottage (1:3), Premier League champions Manchester City whom they held at home (1:1), Brighton also vying for European competition (0:1), and finally a match against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge (1:2). Only the goalless draw against Everton away (0:0) could be labelled an outright disappointment. A breath of fresh air came with their League Cup victory over Chelsea (2:0), where they also hit the woodwork twice. Chelsea's secondary squad outmatches Newcastle United's partially utilised first team. Now, another test awaits them in the form of Arsenal.
Arsenal
Arsenal aren't in ideal form either. The commanding win over Preston North End (3:0) in the League Cup's round of 16 isn't necessarily indicative. They achieved this with a half-reserve squad, pivotal plays coming from Gabriel Jesus, marking his first of the season (1+1), defender Jakub Kiwior providing two assists, and 17-year-old Ethan Nwaneri scoring his third League Cup goal. All three featured in the second half of their draw with Liverpool (22). The attackers came on for just over five minutes, while the Pole replaced the injured Gabriel. He stands a chance to start, with the Brazilian certainly absent.
Newcastle United vs Arsenal Prediction
Arsenal's defence hasn't been inspiring lately, conceding in their last five Premier League matches. We think both teams will score, because at St James’ Park, only Brighton have kept a clean sheet against Newcastle United this season, while their own defence has only fully shut out a Second League team and a lacklustre Southampton.
