Southampton’s fans still remember their elimination from the Premier League, nobody wants to repeat that. Against Newcastle, Southampton have to play well in defence and attack, showing that they aren’t weak.
Newcastle United
Newcastle has a team problem, which gives the English Premier League newcomer a better chance to get more points. The important players Sven Botman, Jamaal Lascelles, Lewis Miley , Matthew Targett and Callum Wilson got injured in friendlies and Sandeo Tonali is still unavailable, due to his suspended ban. Even after wins against Girona (4:0) and Stade Brest (1:0), the team doesn’t look impressive. The deal for Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace won’t be done before the start of their campaign.
Southampton
In seven summer friendlies, Southampton only lost once to Oxford (0:2), and in three August matches they only conceded one goal. In attack, the team will rely on ex-Championship stars Adam Armstrong and Ben Brereton and experienced Adam Lallana will help the midfield with his versatility. Russell Martin’s formation 3–4-3 is intriguing. Wing-backs Kyle Walker-Peters and Yukinari Sugawara could become potential stars in it.

In the first half of 2023, Newcastle beat Southampton twice (2:1 and 3:1). Now, the English Premier League newcomers will fight back and not lose a big score. Newcastle isn’t in shape to crush their opponents. A +2 handicap for the away team looks very safe.
