Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the US Open match.
Nuno Borges
Relatively stable results and local successes allow Nuno Borges to maintain his position in the top 50 of the world rankings. The 27-year-old Portuguese player has, for only the second time in his career, managed to secure two wins in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament. To be honest, luck played a significant role here: Borges wasn't matched against players of comparable level. Nonetheless, even in his match against Jakub Mensik (65), Borges was hanging by a thread (6:7, 6:1, 3:6, 7:6, 6:0), twice coming back from a set down and staging a comeback in the decisive tiebreak from 3:6 down.
Daniil Medvedev
The first week of the US Open dispelled all doubts regarding Daniil Medvedev's current form. Moreover, due to early elimination in Montreal and Cincinnati, the Russian tennis player looks fresh and has conserved his energy for the crucial stages. Medvedev dispatched his first three opponents with a combined score of 9-1 in sets. This is the fewest sets he has dropped in the first week of any Grand Slam in 2024. Furthermore, with Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz out of the tournament, Medvedev's chances for the title have significantly increased.
Nuno Borges - Daniil Medvedev Prediction
So far, Borges has never defeated a top-10 player. He has eight losses in eight matches with a set difference of 1-17. The last time the Portuguese player lost to Medvedev on grass. Why would this trend break on Daniil's favourite American hardcourt?
