Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the ATP Wimbledon match.
In the second round of Wimbledon, Britain’s Oliver Tarvet faces the reigning champion and world No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz. The young home player will aim to put on a respectable showing for the crowd, but the gulf in class is clear.
Oliver Tarvet
Tarvet (ATP No. 733) came through qualifying and defeated Leandro Riedi in the opening round. However, even at that level he struggled to impose himself — just 19 winners across the match. His game is not yet suited for competing on equal footing with top-10 players. Tarvet mostly plays on the Challenger circuit, where the field largely consists of players outside the world’s top 100.
Carlos Alcaraz
Alcaraz took some time to settle in his opener, dropping two sets to Fabio Fognini, but once he found his rhythm, the Spaniard hit his usual high level. He rarely falters against players outside the top 100, boasting a career record of 40 wins in 46 such matches. On grass, Carlitos has lost just five times in 35 appearances.
Oliver Tarvet vs Carlos Alcaraz Prediction
The class difference here is stark. Alcaraz will be looking to wrap this one up quickly to preserve energy for the later stages. Tarvet will struggle to keep pace, even across individual games. Expect the defending champion to dominate with a winning margin of at least nine games.
