Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the NHL match.
The reigning champions have already kicked off their season with a stunning victory, while the Ottawa Senators are tasked with proving that their preseason success was no fluke.
Ottawa Senators
The Senators put in a commendable effort during the preseason games: securing five wins, one overtime loss, and only one defeat. The team's top scorer was Carter Yakemchuk (2+5 in 4 games), who was drafted 7th overall. Nonetheless, the club decided that the 19-year-old defenseman would benefit from spending the season with the Calgary Hitmen in the WHL.
There is a good chance Claude Giroux will return for the first game, having taken time off for the birth of his third son. Moreover, Brady Tkachuk’s minor upper-body injury should not keep him from being available by the season opener. Therefore, the hosts are well-prepared to face the champions.
Florida Panthers
In their opening game, the Panthers demonstrated their attacking prowess (scoring six goals in total and four in the first period), with Sergei Bobrovsky providing reliable goalkeeping. Only two late goals in the final three minutes allowed the Boston Bruins to slightly close the gap, but the game was not as close as the scoreline might suggest (6:4).
The power play did not deliver (0 out of 6), but they did manage a shorthanded goal through Sam Reinhart's individual effort. They also conceded a similar goal from the opposition and let in one goal over four penalties. This all suggests the visitors are entertaining foes, with goals happening in any set-up.
Ottawa Senators vs Florida Panthers Prediction
The Panthers' defence has some weak spots now, which can be exploited, especially on the power play, but their offence remains stronger than the Senators' (ranking 11th against 20th last season). Goals are expected at both ends, so the bet is for the game to feature six or more goals.
