Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Europa League match.
Last season PAOK and Maccabi Tel Aviv were both in the Europa League group stage but never crossed paths. This Wednesday they finally meet in Thessaloniki.
PAOK
PAOK are seen as favourites not only because of home advantage but also thanks to a stronger showing in Europe last year. The Greek side reached the play-off knockout round with three wins and a draw from eight matches, while Maccabi Tel Aviv managed only two victories and finished near the bottom. However, recent form has been patchy. PAOK crashed out of the Greek Cup against Levadiakos (1:4) and were held to a goalless draw by Panetolikos in the Super League.
Maccabi Tel Aviv
After knocking out Dynamo Kyiv in the Europa League play-off round (3:1, 0:1), Maccabi Tel Aviv have focused solely on domestic football. They have made a perfect start in Israel, winning four from four – twice at home and twice away – and trail only Hapoel Be’er Sheva on goal difference. True, most of those opponents were not top-tier sides last season, aside from Maccabi Netanya, but consistent wins have boosted confidence.
PAOK vs Maccabi Tel Aviv Prediction
With momentum on their side, Maccabi Tel Aviv look capable of making life difficult for PAOK and coming away with something. The safest play is a small handicap in favour of the visitors, which also covers a narrow home win.
