Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the WNBA match.
The Minnesota Lynx remain the only unbeaten side in the Western Conference, but now face a real test against the Phoenix Mercury — their closest pursuers. Extending their perfect record won’t come easy in a clash like this.
Phoenix Mercury
So far this season, the Mercury have largely only found success against weaker sides. They did thrash the Seattle Storm (81:59) in the season opener, but fell short in the return fixture just days later (70:77). The biggest issue for the Mercury is the stark drop-off between the starting five and the bench. Their substitutes average just 23.4 of the team’s 80.4 points per game — a worrying imbalance.
Minnesota Lynx
The Lynx, by contrast, have been one of the most consistent offensive outfits in the league. They rank second in scoring (86.2 points per game) and field goal percentage (47%). Napheesa Collier is having a standout season, averaging 26.8 points and 7.8 rebounds — no player in the WNBA is scoring more at the moment.
Phoenix Mercury vs Minnesota Lynx Prediction
The Minnesota Lynx simply look more balanced and built to win as a team. The Phoenix Mercury have yet to prove themselves against top-tier opposition, so it’s difficult to back them with confidence. Backing the visitors with a modest handicap seems the smart play.
