Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Championship match.
Portsmouth took a massive step towards securing their Championship status for next season with a stunning win over the league leaders. Meanwhile, Plymouth Argyle sank deeper into the relegation zone and continue to struggle for survival.
Portsmouth
Portsmouth had already shown signs of being a tough opponent for Leeds United earlier in the season, almost winning at Elland Road in the opening round (3:3), only conceding a last-minute equaliser. This time, nothing saved the Yorkshire club. Goalkeeper Nicolas Schmid played a key role, making a brilliant double save in the 39th minute that boosted his side’s confidence. Colby Bishop converted one of Portsmouth’s three shots on target in the 61st minute, and in stoppage time, Schmid once again proved decisive by denying Leeds from a corner. Portsmouth have now won three consecutive home games and seven of their last nine at Fratton Park.
Plymouth Argyle
Plymouth Argyle, on the other hand, offered nothing at home, where they previously relied on their strong record to make up for their dreadful away form. Sheffield Wednesday completely outclassed them (3:0), exposing their shaky defence. Plymouth Argyle’s backline looked lifeless, standing static as the visitors ran riot. A bizarre own goal from Nathanael Ogbeta summed up their defensive woes. Losing Morgan Whittaker to Middlesbrough in the January transfer window has significantly weakened their attacking output.
Portsmouth vs Plymouth Argyle Prediction
The contrast in discipline and mentality between these two teams in the previous round was glaring. Portsmouth have all the momentum, while Plymouth Argyle look lost and demoralised. Nothing suggests this will end in anything other than another home win for Portsmouth.
