Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Championship match.
Portsmouth currently have many problems in defence, although their attacking situation is not much better. Their next opponent, West Bromwich Albion, is ready to capitalise on this and maintain their place in the top two of the championship.
Portsmouth
Portsmouth seem to be doing well for a newcomer who has been absent from the Championship for a dozen seasons: they are giving the favourites a hard time, but have yet to secure a victory. Home games are no exception. They failed to score against Millwall (0:0) in the League Cup and Luton Town (0:1) in the Championship, despite having nearly twice the possession in both matches. Defensively, they have nothing to boast about either: eight goals conceded in four matches, including four in their last match against Sunderland, who are roughly on par with their upcoming opponents.
West Bromwich Albion
West Bromwich Albion currently have the second-best defence in the league, conceding only two goals. This defensive solidity is reflected in their second position in the table. Interestingly, five of West Bromwich Albion's six goals have been scored away from home. They achieved this in just two matches, averaging 1.51 xG and 7.5 shots (3.5 on target). These are impressive figures, so Portsmouth's defence needs to be very cautious. Against a team with one of the worst defences, West Bromwich Albion could break through for more goals.
Portsmouth — West Bromwich Albion Prediction
Even at Fratton Park, where Portsmouth appear more organised, they are unlikely to win against one of the leaders. The visitors will likely take home at least one point, and West Bromwich Albion might even cover the total over 1.5 on their own.
