Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Nations League match.
The Nations League final features two of the Iberian Peninsula's strongest national teams. Portugal reached the final after mounting a comeback against Denmark in the quarter-finals and overturning a deficit to defeat Germany in the semi-finals. Spain, the reigning European champions and previous winners of the Nations League, secured their place in the final with a dramatic victory over France.
Portugal
Portugal impressed during the knockout stages, dismantling Denmark (5:2) at home before coming from behind to beat Germany (2:1). Portugal have built significant momentum — their xG against Germany stood at 2.56 compared to 1.11. Cristiano Ronaldo has been especially effective, registering seven goals in this Nations League campaign. However, their defensive record remains a concern — Portugal have kept only one clean sheet in nine tournament matches.
Spain
Spain are currently unbeaten in 24 consecutive competitive fixtures and continue to be involved in high-scoring matches. In nine Nations League games, Spain have featured over 2.5 goals in seven of them. They have scored 23 goals during this run but have also conceded 13. Their knockout clashes were particularly eventful: two draws with Netherlands (2:2 and 3:3 after extra time), followed by a 5:4 win over France. Lamine Yamal has been in excellent form, scoring three times in as many knockout appearances. In total, 16 different players have found the net for Spain in this campaign.
Portugal vs Spain Prediction
This final is expected to be another open contest. Both teams favour an attacking style and regularly find the net. Portugal are well-equipped to exploit the defensive vulnerabilities of Spain, while Spain have consistently scored at least twice per match for more than six months.
