Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the EFL Cup match.
The only meeting between these clubs in the 21st century took place in January 2017, in the FA Cup. Arsenal won away with a 2:1 scoreline. Will they take victory from Deepdale again this time?
Preston North End
It's fair to say that Preston North End are experiencing a bright spell. They are unbeaten in five matches: three games without conceding, followed by two high-scoring draws against Norwich City (2:2) and Plymouth Argyle (3:3). The signs of vulnerability include playing away and conceding three goals. However, this time Preston play at home, where they have suffered just one defeat in eight matches, that defeat being in the first round against Sheffield United (0:2).
Arsenal
At the end of September and beginning of October, everything was going well for Arsenal: four consecutive wins, including a deserved victory over Paris Saint-Germain (2:0). After the international break, things have not quite clicked. Yes, there was a win over Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League, but it was a narrow 1:0, and by their play, it should have been at least 3:0. Against Liverpool, they let the win slip, and they suffered a defeat to Bournemouth, hindered by a red card.
Preston North End vs Arsenal Prediction
Before a fairly challenging trip to Newcastle United, Mikel Arteta is unlikely to strain the first team too much, as they are already stretched with some players out through injuries and suspensions. For Preston North End players, however, it's a chance to showcase themselves to the nation, as Arsenal games receive much more viewership. Even if they lose in regulation time, it will likely be by just one goal.
