Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Championship match.
Both teams were disappointing in the previous round, suffering setbacks: Preston North End failed to capitalise on their home advantage, while Sunderland dropped points against a lower-ranked team. They both need to make amends for those failures, but who will come out on top?
Preston North End
Preston North End were trailing just two points behind Bristol City in the table but failed to take the opportunity to overtake them, allowing the visitors to convert too much. They lost 3:1 despite the fact that Bristol City managed only five shots, three of which were on target, meaning goalkeeper Freddie Woodman didn't save any. Their xGA was almost two goals lower (1.02).
Sunderland
Sunderland are capable of creating more chances against Preston North End if given the opportunity: they score more than expected (23 goals from 19.06 xG). In their previous game against Queens Park Rangers, the referee's decision to send off Jobe Bellingham in the 58th minute was a turning point. The younger brother of Real Madrid's star hasn’t been particularly impressive this season (just two goals and one assist), but his absence was felt by the team in the remaining time. Throughout the second half, Sunderland managed only three off-target shots. Their opponent, too, was lacklustre in using their advantage (nine shots).
Preston North End vs Sunderland Prediction
Sunderland's three-match winning streak was halted, but their six-match unbeaten run continues. However, it might end here. Earlier this year, Preston North End already defeated Sunderland at home in the League Cup (2:0), and last season, both teams traded home victories. Without Jobe Bellingham's creativity, Sunderland might struggle in this game, which is why we'll make a slightly risky prediction in favour of the hosts.
