Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the FA Cup match.
Wycombe Wanderers celebrated their third-round FA Cup victory under Matt Bloomfield, but since then, they have undergone a managerial change. Heading into the fourth round, it will be Mike Dodds overseeing the team from the dugout, marking his first match in charge.
Preston North End
Preston North End currently sit 15th in the Championship after 30 matches, neither in contention for promotion nor in danger of relegation. Their form has been distinctly different at home compared to away fixtures. At Deepdale, they have recorded six wins, seven draws, and just two defeats, while their away record is significantly worse with just two wins in 15 outings. Notably, Preston have not lost at home since 2 November 2024, and they have scored in eight of their last nine home games, rarely conceding more than one goal.
Wycombe Wanderers
Wycombe had been enjoying an excellent season, sitting comfortably in second place in League One, which was an unexpected overachievement. Their success drew attention from a higher level, and as a result, Matt Bloomfield left to take charge at Luton Town. On 2 February, Mike Dodds was appointed as his replacement. The 38-year-old has previously only taken interim charge at Sunderland but has never had a full-time managerial role. This match will be his debut as Wycombe’s coach.
Preston North End vs Wycombe Wanderers Prediction
There may be a short-term boost from the managerial change, but there remains a clear gap in quality between these teams. Wycombe, despite their strong League One campaign, are not yet at the level of a mid-table Championship side. The visitors might manage to score, but it is unlikely to be enough to progress.
