Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Brazilian Serie A match.
Last season told a different story — São Paulo earned a place in the Copa Libertadores, while Bragantino narrowly avoided the relegation zone. This year, however, the standings have turned. Things could go from bad to worse for São Paulo, especially as they face this challenge on the road.
Red Bull Bragantino
Bragantino currently sit comfortably in the direct qualification zone for the Copa Libertadores. Their solid position is underpinned by eight wins in thirteen league fixtures and the added advantage of not being involved in international competitions. Playing just once a week is a major benefit given the intense Brazilian heat. That said, São Paulo may still pose a threat, with two of Bragantino’s three defeats this season coming at home.
São Paulo
So what can we expect from São Paulo on their travels? Their domestic away form has been disappointing: three draws and three defeats, including three matches without finding the net. In contrast, they’ve looked much stronger in the Copa Libertadores, winning all three of their away matches without conceding. But which version of the team will show up? It’s important to note that in the continental competition, the squad faced opponents from Argentina, Paraguay, and Peru — sides generally regarded as playing at a slightly lower level.
Red Bull Bragantino vs São Paulo Prediction
From the technical area, São Paulo will now be guided by Hernán Crespo, who is more widely recognised than Luis Zubeldía. However, Hernán Crespo is still more famous for his exploits as a player than for his coaching credentials. This marks his second spell with the club. In the 2021 campaign under his management, São Paulo suffered a home defeat to Bragantino (1:2), and by the time of the second leg in October, Hernán Crespo had already left. The change in leadership made little difference — Bragantino won again (1:0). We expect that pattern to continue.
