Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Ligue 1 match.
If Marseille lose their match against Reims, Monaco and Nice draw, and Paris Saint-Germain wins against Saint-Étienne, then the Parisian club will become 13-time French champions this weekend. Besides, it’s a high-profile matchup in general.
Saint-Étienne
The 10-time French champions are a shadow of their former selves. A 2:0 lead over Montpellier in their last match was overshadowed by crowd trouble that saw the game abandoned — and potentially forfeited. It was just another chapter in a season plagued by misfortune and poor form: 9 matches without a win and growing off-field turmoil. Any hope of a revival is dimmed by their own supporters’ actions.
Paris Saint-Germain
Paris Saint-Germain are flying. Fresh off a commanding 3:1 win in Le Classique against Marseille, and through to the Champions League quarter-finals, PSG are operating with supreme confidence. As noted previously, they could clinch the title as early as after this game, but it’s difficult to imagine Marseille losing to the seemingly weak Reims.
Saint-Étienne vs Paris Saint-Germain Prediction
What could help Saint-Étienne take points from the leader of French football? Their own fans? As recent events have shown, they might actually make things worse. Even Marseille couldn’t hold back Paris Saint-Germain, so if the Parisians repeat those 25 shots from the first leg, but with slightly better accuracy, a rout is likely.
