Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Major League Soccer match.
While both clubs share the same number of goals conceded (18), that’s where the similarities end. San Diego are one of the surprise packages of the 2025 MLS season, currently chasing leaders Vancouver in the Western Conference. Austin, on the other hand, are struggling to stay afloat in the playoff race, hovering just outside the wild card zone.
San Diego FC
In just their inaugural MLS season, San Diego have already emerged as genuine contenders. Despite a narrow 0:1 loss to Seattle Sounders FC in their last outing, the Southern California newcomers remain second in the West. Given they only held their expansion draft in 2024 and played their first league match this February, the cohesion they’ve built in such a short time is impressive. At home, they’ve been especially strong — winning three of their last four matches at Snapdragon Stadium and currently ranking fifth in MLS for home form.
Austin FC
Austin FC, in their fifth MLS season, are still looking for consistency. After a promising 2022 campaign that saw them reach the playoffs from second place in the West, they’ve since reverted to playoff fringe status. May has been particularly frustrating — four consecutive draws followed by a defeat, leaving them just outside the wild card zone due to an inferior goals-scored record compared to Houston. The lack of attacking edge is holding them back.
San Diego FC vs Austin FC Prediction
These two clubs met for the first time earlier this season, with Austin grabbing a 2:1 win at home. But on the road, and especially against a confident San Diego side, repeating that feat will be difficult. San Diego’s home form and momentum make them the safer pick here, especially against a team stuck in a cycle of draws and missed opportunities.
