Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Nations League match.
Scotland's inconsistent performances in 2024 leave them with minimal chances of retaining their spot in the Nations League's top division. Despite being the home side, bookmakers have pegged Scotland as underdogs against Croatia, who are on the brink of securing a playoff place.
Scotland
Since March, Scotland have managed only a solitary victory across 11 matches, beating Gibraltar in a friendly (2:0). Since September 2023, the British side have kept only two clean sheets, and varying their formations between three or four defenders has done little to fortify their defence. In Zagreb last month, they allowed 1.25 xG against Croatia and were thoroughly outplayed in terms of chances (2-6 in shots on target), resulting in a deserved defeat (1:2).
Croatia
Croatia are in the process of integrating new talent into their squad, featuring names like Luka Sučić, Igor Matanović, Josip Šutalo, and Borna Sosa, who are all set to become key figures following Luka Modrić's departure. In Warsaw against Poland (3:3), the 2022 World Cup bronze medalists made an impressive three-goal surge in seven minutes of the first half, proving their ability to swiftly capitalise even against formidable opponents.
Scotland vs Croatia Prediction
Even without their suspended goalkeeper Dominik Livaković, Croatia are expected to earn points in Glasgow. Scotland have little motivation for the final rounds, and a sudden improvement in performance seems unlikely. Betting on the visitors with a handicap (0) is a solid option for this match.
