Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Conference League match.
The first meeting in Poland finished 1:1, although the balance of play heavily favoured Shakhtar Donetsk — 23-2 in shots. Everything will now be decided in Geneva, where the hosts will try to seize their chance, yet the class, squad depth and quality of Shakhtar Donetsk are objectively superior. For the Ukranians, reaching the group stage is a key objective, whereas Servette look weary after poor runs in Europe and a weak start to the league campaign.
Servette
Servette are enduring a difficult season. In the Champions League they beat Viktoria Plzeň away (1:0), but then lost at home (1:3). In the Europa League they suffered two defeats to Utrecht (1:3, 1:2), so only the third-tier European competition remains. In the Swiss league they have collected just one point from three rounds and sit bottom of the standings. In the first match with Shakhtar Donetsk, Servette scored an early free-kick goal and then looked to protect the lead. The squad defended for long spells and offered little in attacking phases. A slightly bolder approach at home is possible, but the squad level is clearly lower.
Shakhtar Donetsk
Shakhtar Donetsk are performing well. In qualifying they eased past Ilves (6:0 on aggregate) and then beat Beşiktaş with room to spare (6:2). They looked the stronger side against Panathinaikos, but lost a penalty shoot-out after two goalless draws. In the Ukrainian Premier League they have made a confident start with seven points from three matches. A major strength is the Brazilian attacking group: quick, skilful players who are highly motivated to make their mark in Europe. In the first meeting with Servette, the Ukrainian side completely dominated but converted only one chance. Shakhtar Donetsk are rightly considered favourites away from home.
Servette vs Shakhtar Donetsk Prediction
Servette probably squeezed the maximum by scoring in the first match, and with fatigue and domestic problems they are unlikely to sustain 90 minutes against a higher-quality opponent. Shakhtar Donetsk should progress, yet the character of the contest and the cautious approach often adopted by the team suggest we do not expect a rout.
