Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Conference League match.
Shakhtar bring plenty of European pedigree, regularly featuring in group stages, while for Servette this is another chance to test themselves against a more established opponent and build on last season’s return to continental football.
Shakhtar Donetsk
Shakhtar Donetsk remain one of Eastern Europe’s flagships. Once again this summer, changes to the squad were inevitable: some leaders departed, but the blend of young foreign talent and domestic prospects has been retained. In qualification they showcased their trademark tactical flexibility — disciplined defending coupled with sharp counter-attacks. Domestically, recent matches have brought a string of victories, though lapses against stronger rivals still occur. On the European stage, Shakhtar have consistently shown they can adapt to neutral venues and strike quickly in transition.
Servette
The Swiss club established themselves near the top of the Super League last season and already have experience in the Conference League. Their main strengths lie in organisation and closing down space. In qualification, Servette fought hard but found that scoring does not always translate into wins. Away from home, especially in Europe against high-calibre opposition, their record is shaky — they tend to struggle when put under sustained pressure.
Shakhtar Donetsk vs Servette Prediction
The gulf in experience and individual quality is clear. Shakhtar have the pace and technical ability to break down Servette’s back line. The visitors will look to slow the tempo and sit deep, but holding firm for 90 minutes will be difficult. The Ukrainians should edge this tie thanks to superior talent and sharper execution in attack, though the match is unlikely to produce a glut of goals.
