Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the EFL Cup match.
The giant-killers Grimsby Town, fresh from knocking Manchester United out, now head to Hillsborough looking to book a spot in the fourth round at the expense of Sheffield Wednesday.
Sheffield Wednesday
On paper Sheffield Wednesday should be clear favourites, yet their recent home record says otherwise. Three straight defeats at Hillsborough, with a combined scoreline of 0:8, underline the crisis. Their only league point in five rounds came away at newly promoted Wrexham (2:2). Yes, they eliminated Premier League side Leeds United in the second round (1:1, on penalties 3:0), but Leeds looked half-hearted about the competition.
Grimsby Town
Grimsby also advanced thanks to penalties (2:2, 12:11 on penalties against Manchester United), but Manchester United’s defensive collapse and goalkeeper errors gave the League Two side a fighting chance. Sheffield Wednesday themselves were comfortably undone by Bristol City (0:3) last weekend, conceding twice under pressure — so Grimsby should fancy their chances of at least nicking a goal.
Sheffield Wednesday vs Grimsby Town Prediction
That points to goals rather than a tight affair. Both teams to score is an option, but the safer play looks the over 2.5. Either side could win big if things fall their way, and let’s not forget Sheffield Wednesday already put five past Grimsby in this competition in 2023 (5:1).
