Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Championship match.
This game is supposed to be exciting. Both teams can surprise in the beginning of the season with some unpredictable results. Leeds United are supposed to have an advantage as their players are more skilful. However, the local fans will disagree.
Sheffield Wednesday
In the first two rounds, Sheffield Wednesday had mixed performances. They kicked off by scoring four goals against Plymouth at home, looking impressive. But then, they conceded the same number against Sunderland without finding the net themselves, despite Sunderland having 1.67 xG. The flanks in their defence completely failed, and considering Leeds love to play with full width in attack, their primary task in the upcoming match will be to block crosses and cutbacks, which is challenging.
Leeds United
Leeds started the season with a surprising 3:3 draw against Portsmouth, who returned to the Championship after 12 years and could have even lost that game. It was worth worrying about the defence in the match against strong West Bromwich, but the game turned out to be quite even: both teams recorded 0.70 xG, and Leeds had more shots (12-9). Possession was 58% to 42% in favour of West Bromwich, but the hosts' efforts didn’t convert into anything serious.
Sheffield Wednesday - Leeds United Prediction
In their last six head-to-head meetings, the teams have never scored more than two goals. At Hillsborough, the home side has failed to win in three matches (2 draws and 1 defeat, 1-3 GD). Despite their superb performance against Plymouth, Leeds are a much more balanced team. The draw against Portsmouth appears to be an anomaly, so it would be more reasonable to bet on the visitors.
