Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Champions League Qualifying match.
Shkëndija reaching the third qualifying round of the Champions League stand out as one of the biggest surprises at this stage of the tournament. After their unexpected triumph over FCSB (3:1 on aggregate), the team may find it difficult to recapture the emotional intensity required for the upcoming clash with Qarabağ.
Shkëndija
Over the past month, Shkëndija have played four Champions League qualifying fixtures, failing to win any of them by a margin of two or more goals. In the first qualifying round against New Saints FC (2:1 on aggregate), they managed to stay competitive throughout regular time. The second leg against FCSB in Bucharest ended 2:1 and was a textbook case of defending a lead, as evidenced by the shot count (9-15). Shkëndija appear to have reached their current potential and seem largely content with securing qualification for any European competition.
Qarabağ
In recent weeks, Qarabağ have shown a clear ability to dismantle teams of Shkëndija’s level, even when creating only a limited number of chances. Against Shelbourne FC (4:0 on aggregate), the team effectively settled the tie in the first leg away from home 3:0, dominating attacking transitions and registering 8 shots on target without reply. The only absentee in the Qarabağ squad is the injured Amin Ramazanov, whose absence does not significantly disrupt their tactical structure.
Shkëndija vs Qarabağ Prediction
We expect Shkëndija to face difficulties progressing the ball from the outset. Qarabağ are likely to assert dominance before the interval — backing the away win is the recommended play.
