Adam Williams presents his prediction for the World Snooker Championship match.
Si Jiahui and David Gilbert, both recent semi-finalists at the World Championship, are set to face each other in the first round.
Si Jiahui
The 21-year-old “Pearl” is one of the brightest young talents in world snooker. After making his debut on the main tour in 2019, he has progressed from a promising newcomer to a top 16 player in just a few seasons, owing to his fearless attacking play and composure in decisive moments. The highlight of Si’s career thus far is his performance at the 2023 World Championship, where he overcame Shaun Murphy, Robert Milkins, and Anthony McGill. In a dramatic semi-final encounter with Luca Brecel, Si was unable to maintain a 14-5 lead and ultimately lost 17-15. This season, Jiahui reached the semi-finals of the Saudi Arabian Masters and the final of the Wuhan Open, but was defeated by Xiao Guodong 10-7.
David Gilbert
The 42-year-old “Farmer” is one of the most versatile and technically gifted players on the tour, capable of troubling any top player. Despite this, David has only secured one professional victory to date, in the short-format 2021 Championship League. Gilbert first joined the tour in 2010, but it took nearly a decade for him to truly come into his own. David has reached the finals of the 2015 International Championship, 2018 World Open, 2019 German Masters, and 2019 English Open, but was unsuccessful in each instance. Gilbert has also reached two World Championship semi-finals, coming agonizingly close to reaching the final in 2019, but eventually losing 17-16 in a deciding frame to John Higgins. Last year, he was defeated 17-11 by Kyren Wilson.
Si Jiahui vs David Gilbert Prediction
Both players thrive in the Crucible atmosphere and are adept at playing long matches. Gilbert possesses greater experience, but Si exhibits considerably more talent and promise. We anticipate a closely contested encounter, with no clear favourite. Gilbert defeated Gong Chenzhi 10-6 and Aaron Hill 10-9 in qualifying matches, indicating good form. Therefore, we expect to see a tight game.
