Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the UEFA Nations League match.
At Euro 2024, both Slovenia and Austria were eliminated from the tournament at the Round of 16, although only Austria left a positive impression. They are expected to continue progressing, with the former RB Leipzig and Manchester United coach proving his credentials.
Slovenia
Over 390 minutes at Euro 2024, Slovenia managed just two goals, with local star Benjamin Šeško epitomising their attacking struggles (0 + 0). It was evident that the team was not expected to make a breakthrough in the tournament, and without goalkeeper Jan Oblak, there wouldn't have been a contest against Portugal (0:1 after a penalty shootout). Additionally, the defensive pairing of Jaka Bijol and Vanja Drkušič does not instil fear in top attacks.
Austria
Conversely, Austria showcased their attacking prowess during the continental championship. Against Poland (3:1), the Netherlands (3:2), and Turkey (1:2), they amassed a combined 5.66 xG. It seems Ralf Rangnick is open to using unconventional options in the Nations League with Florian Kainz, Marcel Sabitzer, and Alexander Schmidt in one line, providing Marko Arnautović and Christoph Baumgartner with even more opportunities in the attacking third.
Slovenia - Austria Prediction
Since March 2018, Slovenia have lost to Austria twice, failing to score in these matches (0:3, 0:1, and 0:1). Austria once again have excellent chances for a win, but we will go with a safe bet on the visitors.
