Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the DFL-Supercup match.
This year’s German Super Cup will be held at the MHPArena, where DFB-Pokal winners Stuttgart host Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich. For both sides, it’s a chance to start the season with silverware, but the gap in quality is clear.
Stuttgart
Stuttgart lifted the cup in May with a 4:2 win over Arminia in the final, having led by four goals during the match. Their league campaign was poor, finishing only ninth, with seven defeats in their last ten home games. They ended the season in free-scoring fashion (12 goals in the last four rounds) and struck 15 times in four summer friendlies, but a 1:0 loss to Bologna on 9 August exposed defensive frailties.
Bayern Munich
Under Vincent Kompany, Bayern reclaimed the title with 82 points, finishing 13 clear of Bayer Leverkusen. They scored 99 goals – the second-best tally in club history since 1972 – and conceded only 32, the league’s best defensive record. In their last 12 meetings with Stuttgart, Bayern have lost just once, winning four of the last five. The Bavarians also enjoyed top-level match practice at the Club World Cup and have won 10 of their last 13 competitive fixtures.
Stuttgart vs Bayern Munich Prediction
Stuttgart are strong going forward but inconsistent at home, and in recent seasons they have regularly come up short against Bayern. The champions are in excellent shape, with a formidable attack and solid defence, and the head-to-head record further underlines their status as favourites. Expect Bayern’s quality to settle this in normal time.
