Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the ATP Monte Carlo match.
Arthur Fils enters his Monte Carlo opener fresh and well-prepared for the clay surface — a surface that has traditionally complemented his style of play. Tallon Griekspoor, meanwhile, faces a tough turnaround. The Dutchman played a taxing final in Marrakech just a couple of days ago and will need to adjust quickly to the conditions.
Tallon Griekspoor
March was productive for Griekspoor, with a semi-final appearance in Dubai and a quarter-final run at Indian Wells. However, his record on clay leaves much to be desired: just one win in four matches at Monte Carlo and a poor 13% success rate against top-20 opponents on this surface (1:7). Additionally, he recently endured a physically draining match against Luciano Darderi, losing in consecutive tie-break sets 6:7, 6:7, despite being the pre-match favourite.
Arthur Fils
The Frenchman has established himself as a reliable performer on clay. His résumé includes two ATP titles and four wins in his last six matches against top-50 opponents. Fils’s game is well suited to the slow courts in Monte Carlo — combining aggressive baseline play, a powerful serve, and the added boost of playing at home. He has also had ample time to prepare, with his previous match dating back to 27 March.
Tallon Griekspoor vs Arthur Fils Prediction
Griekspoor has often faltered against high-calibre players on clay and has a history of underwhelming performances in Monte Carlo. Fils, by contrast, is playing on home soil and arrives in top condition. The advantage appears to lie with the Frenchman, whose strengths align well with the demands of the surface.
