Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the WTA US Open match.
Mirra Andreeva continues her run at the US Open and has already come through Alycia Parks and Anastasia Potapova in convincing fashion, dropping just five games in total. For Taylor Townsend, who is outside the world’s top 100, this will be a serious test.
Taylor Townsend
Taylor Townsend has made it into the second round, beating Antonia Ružić (6:4, 6:4) and Jelena Ostapenko (7:5, 6:1), but her statistics against strong opposition on hard courts are unpromising. Across her career, she has lost 12 of 13 matches against top-10 opponents on this surface. In addition, on hard courts Taylor was eliminated in the opening round at five of ten tournaments.
Mirra Andreeva
Mirra Andreeva is steadily rediscovering her earlier power. After a tough patch in the summer, the world No 5 took a break and arrived at the US Open in ideal shape. Against Alycia Parks she dropped just one game (6:1, 6:0), then dispatched Anastasia Potapova just as convincingly (6:1, 6:3). In those matches she faced only four break points and saved them all. They have met once in Madrid, where Mirra won by five games.
Taylor Townsend vs Mirra Andreeva Prediction
Mirra Andreeva has found form and looks like her early-season self. Taylor Townsend pulled off an upset by eliminating world No. 24 Jelena Ostapenko in the second round, but dealing with Andreeva looks beyond her.
