Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the ATP Mallorca match.
Tomás Martín Etcheverry and Roberto Bautista Agut both opted to stay in Spanish-speaking territory for the Mallorca Open, though they’ll be competing on a surface far from their preferred clay. The key question is: who will adapt better to the grass?
Tomás Martín Etcheverry
The 25-year-old Argentine is the younger of the two by some margin, but grass remains his least effective surface. In both 2023 and 2024, Etcheverry was eliminated early in Eastbourne and only made it as far as the second round at Wimbledon. The 2025 season has brought slight improvement — he lost early in 's-Hertogenbosch but reached the third round in Halle, including an impressive win over Andrey Rublev. Still, his movement and style are better suited to clay courts.
Roberto Bautista Agut
The 37-year-old Spaniard, in contrast, has far more experience and a game well-tailored to fast surfaces. Just last week in London, Bautista Agut reached the semi-finals, beating seeded players Jakub Mensik (3:6, 6:3, 7:5) and Holger Rune (7:6, 6:7, 6:2) along the way before falling to top seed Carlos Alcaraz (4:6, 4:6). His Wimbledon track record is solid too — he reached the last 16 in 2024. His grass-court nous remains intact despite his age.
Tomás Martín Etcheverry vs Roberto Bautista Agut Prediction
The two met once before, in Antwerp last year, with Bautista Agut winning in straight sets on a hard court (7:6, 6:4). With form, surface and experience all in his favour, the Spaniard should get the job done again.
