Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the English Premier League match.
This is the second marquee match in the milestone round of the Premier League. The hosts have long been considered contenders for a Champions League spot. The visitors are currently playing successfully in the competition and sit fourth in the Premier League, giving them another chance to compete in the next Champions League.
Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham Hotspur have deserved praise for their victory in the League Cup Round of 16 over the strongest remaining opponents, Manchester City (2:1). They achieved what seemed impossible this season by defeating the Manchester team. A line-up nearly as strong as their first-choice effectively utilised their limited opportunities (11 shots with just 32% possession). They boasted a high shooting accuracy (64% — 7 on target), although xG were noticeably lower than their actual goals at 0.88. In recent matches, Tottenham Hotspur haven’t squandered their potential but have only secured one Premier League win out of three (West Ham United 4:1).
Aston Villa
Aston Villa, like Manchester City, saw their long unbeaten run of 11 matches come to an end, coinciding with their elimination from the League Cup. Crystal Palace beat both Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa (1:2). In the second half, the Birmingham side should have had the Londoners down, but Crystal Palace held on and then capitalised on the hosts’ mistake when transitioning from defence. Aston Villa have stumbled under Unai Emery, having conceded a late equaliser against Bournemouth in their recent Premier League encounter.
Tottenham Hotspur vs Aston Villa Prediction
Tottenham Hotspur will have the home advantage, which is significant for them. In their last five home fixtures, they have triumphed with an aggregate score of 13:3. We’re confident that the hosts will win.
