Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Women’s World Water Polo Championship match.
The clash between the USA and China is undoubtedly the most anticipated fixture of the opening matchday. Both teams are currently ranked inside the global top ten and are expected to contend for top position in Group B.
USA (women)
The United States are currently third in the world rankings, but their season has started on an underwhelming note. They missed out on qualification for the World Cup in April, following defeats to Hungary (6:10) and Italy (12:13). Though both opponents are considered elite, China are of a comparable standard and should not be underestimated.
China (women)
China, on the other hand, advanced to the final stage of the World Cup. However, they were left disappointed, finishing in eighth place. Their quarter-final elimination came after a narrow loss to Australia (14:16), who are currently ranked fifth in the world. The squad will be determined to improve on that showing.
USA (women) vs China (women) Prediction
Despite being widely regarded as the favourites, the USA may face a stiffer challenge than expected. Recent form suggests the teams are evenly matched, and this encounter is unlikely to be a one-sided affair. Covering the proposed handicap looks doubtful for the squad.
