Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Copa del Rey match.
Valencia are set to face Barcelona just over a week after suffering a humiliating defeat at the hands of the Catalan side (1:7). That result erased any illusions Valencia supporters had about their club’s current standing, and heading into this cup tie, they are clear underdogs. Even a string of defensive lapses from Barcelona is unlikely to save them.
Valencia
A managerial change at the start of 2025 has had a positive impact on Valencia, with the team picking up points more consistently in La Liga. Despite a win over Celta Vigo (2:1), they remain in the relegation zone, still four points adrift of safety. Under Carlos Carvalhal, Valencia have progressed past Eldense and Ourense in the Copa del Rey (both 2:0). However, those victories were more about their superior individual quality rather than tactical superiority.
Barcelona
Since losing to Atlético Madrid (1:2) in late December, Barcelona have hit top form, winning seven of their last nine matches in all competitions, with two draws along the way. During this run, they have only failed to score twice in a game on two occasions. Against Alavés (1:0) at the weekend, they needed just 0.95 xG and 11 shots to break down a deep defensive block. Even without the injured Pablo Gavira, Hansi Flick has plenty of creative options in midfield.
Valencia vs Barcelona Prediction
Since the start of 2024, Barcelona have beaten Valencia three times with an aggregate score of 4:13. They generated 4.38 xG and put five goals past Valencia before half-time in Catalonia. While a repeat of that scoreline is unlikely, Barcelona should progress to the semi-finals with relative ease.
