Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the WTA 1000 Miami Open match.
They seem to be evenly matched. It’s difficult to distinguish a clear favourite based on their past performances and current form. So how do we choose who has the edge?
Veronika Kudermetova
The Russian is ranked lower than her Chinese opponent, though in terms of potential, she is superior. She is currently 52nd in the world, but in 2022, Kudermetova reached as high as ninth. In her last three tournaments, all of the same category as Miami, Veronika managed to get past the first-round barrier only once—defeating compatriot Ekaterina Alexandrova, who was significantly higher in the world rankings at 22nd (3:6, 6:4, 6:3).
Wang Xinyu
The Chinese player, currently 39th in the world, faced Veronika at her home tournament in Beijing last autumn. Back then, their rankings were reversed—Kudermetova was 39th, while Wang was 50th. The Russian emerged victorious in a tight battle (3:6, 6:4, 7:5). Wang Xinyu had a strong run at the previous WTA-1000 event in Indian Wells, reaching the third round before losing to world No. 4 Jessica Pegula (2:6, 1:6).
Veronika Kudermetova vs Wang Xinyu Prediction
Recent results suggest that the Chinese player is in better form, which gives her a greater chance of winning. Our choice is Wang Xinyu to triumph.
