Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the WTA Roland Garros match.
The 2025 season has proven to be a difficult one for Victoria Azarenka, characterised by frequent losses and a noticeable decline in her physical condition. However, her reputation, experience, and aggressive playing style still enable her to produce flashes of quality. In the second round, she faces Sofia Kenin, who appears to be in excellent form and well-positioned for a strong showing in the tournament.
Victoria Azarenka
So far in 2025, Victoria Azarenka has won only 6 of her 14 matches, being eliminated in the first or second round in eight consecutive tournaments. She has lost her last seven encounters against top-50 opponents, managing to win just a single set while losing the rest in straight sets. These results are not entirely unexpected, given her four-month absence from competitive play and her visibly diminished physical condition. Azarenka began her Roland Garros campaign with a commanding 6:0, 6:0 victory over Yanina Wickmayer, although her opponent was ranked 1,140th and won just 26% of points on first serve.
Sofia Kenin
In contrast, Sofia Kenin is enjoying one of her most consistent seasons in recent years, registering 20 wins from 32 matches. She has come out on top in seven of her nine matches against lower-ranked opposition. Her clay-court form has been particularly impressive—Kenin reached the final in Charleston, a significant warm-up event on the surface, defeating several top-tier players in straight sets: world No. 39 Belinda Bencic, No. 17 Daria Kasatkina, No. 28 Anhelina Kalinina, and No. 16 Amanda Anisimova. At Roland Garros, Kenin overcame Varvara Gracheva, posting excellent statistics behind her first serve—landing 72% and winning 70% of those points.
Victoria Azarenka vs Sofia Kenin Prediction
At present, Sofia Kenin holds a clear advantage in form and overall match sharpness. Victoria Azarenka typically competes effectively only under ideal conditions, and given her current fitness and the demands of the clay surface, she is unlikely to offer sustained resistance. Kenin is expected to prevail with minimal difficulty.
