Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the WTA Wimbledon match.
Two first-round giant-killers go head-to-head in the second round at Wimbledon. Viktoriya Tomova stunned the draw by eliminating two-time finalist Ons Jabeur, while Sonay Kartal took out last year’s quarter-finalist Jelena Ostapenko.
Viktoriya Tomova
While Tomova came through, her performance was far from dominant. In truth, it was more about Jabeur’s collapse — the Tunisian committed 35 unforced errors in a single set before retiring. Tomova simply held her nerve while the favourite self-destructed. Historically, the Bulgarian has struggled against top-100 players, winning just 31% of such matches (49 wins from 157 attempts).
Sonay Kartal
Kartal, meanwhile, left a much stronger impression. She showed real grit against Ostapenko, saving three set points in the opener and regrouping after dropping the second set. Over the past year, the Brit has posted an impressive 50–18 record and will enjoy the added boost of a home crowd behind her.
Viktoriya Tomova vs Sonay Kartal Prediction
With a clear edge in form, consistency, and home support, Kartal looks poised to take control. If she maintains focus and keeps Tomova from building momentum, she should come through comfortably.
