Villarreal are in pursuit of a UEFA Champions League spot. The team currently sit fifth in the La Liga standings, just six points adrift of fourth place with a game in hand. Real Sociedad, meanwhile, are ninth and only two points outside the European qualification places. However, the squad have struggled on the road, often losing to mid-table opposition. Villarreal will also be eager to make up for their 0:1 loss in the reverse fixture.

Villarreal have hit a strong run of form, registering two away wins in their last three league outings — both by 2:1 scorelines against Getafe and Real Betis — followed by a goalless draw against Athletic Bilbao. At home, Villarreal have lost just once in their last six matches and have scored in 13 of their 14 home fixtures this season. In terms of goals scored, they trail only Real Madrid (64) and Barcelona (84) in La Liga. Defensively, though, they have been less convincing, conceding 40 league goals — the highest among the top six.
