Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the La Liga match.
Once regular contenders in the Champions League, both Villarreal and Valencia are going through difficult times. While Villarreal still have a chance of returning to Europe’s top competition, Valencia are in danger of relegation from La Liga. The hosts will look to capitalise on their opponent’s defensive weaknesses.
Villarreal
Since 20 January, Villarreal have found excellent form, collecting 10 points from a possible 12 in their last four La Liga matches. In their two February fixtures alone, they thrashed Valladolid (5:1) and edged Las Palmas (2:1), generating a total of 5.15 xG across those games. They boast the best expected goals (xG) record at home this season (26.49), second only to the three teams in the title race.
Valencia
Despite important wins against Celta Vigo (2:1) and Leganés (2:0), Valencia remains in 18th place, stuck in the relegation zone. Their recent three-match winning streak in La Liga was overshadowed by humiliating defeats to Barcelona (1:7 and 0:5), where the team conceded a combined 6.20 xGA. Manager Carlos Corberán has struggled to find a way to contain strong attacking sides, and a trip to Villarreal does not bode well for them.
Villarreal vs Valencia Prediction
Before the winter transfer window closed, Villarreal’s midfield star Álex Baena rejected a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia, choosing to stay and lead his team. He registered a goal and an assist in their last league match. Meanwhile, Valencia lack players of such quality who can turn games around single-handedly. At Estadio de la Cerámica, Villarreal should be expected to score at least two goals, taking advantage of Valencia’s defensive frailties.
