Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the English Premier League match.
A dismal campaign from Southampton has led to their early relegation to the English Football League Championship. Away against West Ham United, the English Premier League's bottom side are unlikely to take unnecessary risks in possession — another managerial departure has further disrupted the squad’s ability to mount organised attacks.
West Ham United
Despite a poor run of form — just two points from their last five fixtures — West Ham United, who sit 17th, are in no real danger of going down, as they hold a 14-point cushion over Ipswich Town. However, even following the appointment of Graham Potter, they continue to struggle in the final third. With only 36 goals this season, West Ham United have the second-worst attacking record among teams outside the relegation zone. Four of their last five home matches have seen Total Under 2.5 goals.
Southampton
Southampton have scored just 12 goals in 16 away matches — the joint-worst tally alongside Everton. Nevertheless, the squad can maintain a low defensive block away from home, having conceded significantly fewer goals on the road (34) than at St Mary's (43). In their first outing following Ivan Jurić’s departure, the team failed to compete with Aston Villa, losing 0:3 with just 0.28 xG — though against a less potent opponent, Southampton may have a better chance of taking something from the game.
West Ham United vs Southampton Prediction
Since the beginning of 2023, West Ham United have beaten Southampton twice by a minimal margin — both matches ending 1:0. West Ham United look better positioned to edge this encounter again, but it is unlikely to result in a high-scoring or high-quality affair.
