Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the EFL Cup match.
This is the only tie in this week’s EFL Cup without a Premier League or even a Championship side. Both Wigan Athletic and Wycombe Wanderers come from League One.
Wigan Athletic
Wigan Athletic are faring slightly better in the league, sitting 12th with 12 points. Wycombe Wanderers may also be called mid-table, but in reality their 18th place leaves them only a point above the relegation zone. Wigan Athletic have reached the third round with narrow 1:0 wins over Notts County from League Two and Stockport County from League One, both at home. Fortune has given them another home tie, and while life at the Brick Community Stadium has been mixed, they have scored in all six of their league matches there this season, enough to avoid defeat.
Wycombe Wanderers
Wycombe Wanderers impressed for much of last season but stumbled in the final three rounds, missing out on automatic promotion to the Championship. The turning point was the departure of head coach Matt Bloomfield to Luton Town midway through the campaign – a move that hurt both clubs, with Luton also now back in League One. Wycombe Wanderers reached round three of the EFL Cup in similar fashion to Wigan Athletic, scoring once in each tie. However, in the second round they conceded against Bromley of League Two and needed penalties to go through.
Wigan Athletic vs Wycombe Wanderers Prediction
Their last meeting in Wigan ended with a 1:0 win for Wycombe in November 2024, but that was a very different side. This time Wigan Athletic look stronger and have every chance to push through to the last 16. At the very least, they should find the net and avoid defeat in normal time.
