Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the EFL Cup match.
These two sides only met at the end of summer in the Premier League. Less than a month later they face off again, this time at Molineux in the third round of the EFL Cup.
Wolverhampton Wanderers
Back in that league meeting Everton came out on top (3:2). Jack Grealish was the tormentor-in-chief, registering two assists and another key pass in a display that earned him the Premier League Player of the Month award for August. Since then little has changed. Wolverhampton Wanderers remain rooted to the bottom, still without a single point in the league and now the only side yet to get off the mark. Last weekend they even contrived to lose at home to newly promoted Leeds United (1:3).
Everton
Everton, meanwhile, pushed Liverpool as hard as anyone could in a 1:2 derby defeat. The stats underlined how close it was: 11-9 in shots, 3-2 in shots on target, 0.90-0.70 in xG. The difference, as so often, was simply the champions’ superior quality in decisive moments. Everton still sit comfortably mid-table in 10th, reflecting a solid start overall.
Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Everton Prediction
Wolverhampton’s defensive record is alarming – 14 goals shipped in six matches this season. Against that back line, Everton should have enough to score at least twice, which ought to be sufficient to secure at minimum a draw in normal time.
