Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the FIFA Club World Cup match.
Both teams are already out of the running for the knockout stage and now face off in the third-place play-off. Although the match lacks competitive significance, it still represents an opportunity for Wydad Athletic Club and Al-Ain to end their tournament campaigns on a positive note and show their character.
Wydad
Wydad have been one of the more encouraging stories of the competition, even in defeat. The team opted not to sit back but instead tried to play progressive football against both Manchester City and Juventus. Across those two fixtures, Wydad managed 27 attempts on goal and recorded 1.68 xG, scoring once against Juventus.
Al-Ain
In contrast, Al Ain have looked the most unprepared side in the tournament. They have conceded a combined total of 11 goals without reply. Their tactical cohesion has been poor, with disorganised attacking play and a defence that has repeatedly crumbled under pressure. Over the course of two matches, Al-Ain created less than 1.00 xG while allowing opponents to generate 5.64. After a disappointing domestic season that saw them finish fifth in their domestic league, their problems have clearly carried into international competition.
Wydad Athletic Club vs Al-Ain Prediction
With Al-Ain struggling for structure and confidence, Wydad look the more assured side. They have shown they can stay compact, punish defensive lapses, and take all three points.
