The match between Roma and Wolfsburg is set to be the standout fixture of the opening day of the UEFA Women's Champions League. Both teams confidently navigated through the qualifiers and are now keen to perform at their best in the final stages of the tournament.
AS Roma (women)
In the previous campaign, Roma topped Serie A with their attacking prowess, netting 74 goals over 26 matches (the best record). During the Champions League qualifiers against Servette, they scored 10 times over 180 minutes (3:1 and 7:2), although they did allow their opponents several goal-scoring opportunities. At the end of September and the start of October, Roma also committed defensive errors against Napoli (3:1) and Inter Milan (1:1), indicating their defensive gaps could be exposed against a formidable Champions League opponent.
VfL Wolfsburg (women)
In the latter half of September, Wolfsburg decisively eliminated Roma's Serie A rival, ACF Fiorentina, in both legs of their Champions League qualifiers (7:0 and 5:0). Even though the team is considered one of the powerhouses in women's football, last year they failed to reach the finals of European competitions, being knocked out in the qualifiers by FC Paris (5:3 on aggregate). Currently, Wolfsburg's form is proving strong, as they're in the top three of the Bundesliga, with their matches seeing the total over 2.5 scored in four out of five rounds.
