Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Champions League match.
Aston Villa are enduring a less-than-ideal run of form in the latter half of January, going winless during this stretch. However, they have a golden opportunity to delight their fans with a win against Celtic, which would all but secure a spot in the top eight of the Champions League group stage.
Aston Villa
In their recent 0:1 defeat to AS Monaco, Aston Villa played unusually passively in the final third. Despite enjoying 61% possession, they managed only five shots on target. However, substitutions in the second half, particularly Jhon Durán and Ian Maatsen, helped generate 0.43 xG in that period. At home, Aston Villa have been defensively impeccable in the Champions League, conceding zero goals in three matches and collecting seven points out of nine.
Celtic
Celtic have been exceptional at home, earning 10 of their 12 points in European competition at Celtic Park. However, their away form has been lacklustre. In trips to Dortmund and Bergamo (0:0), Celtic struggled against high-pressing opponents, conceding 5.18 xGA across both games. With a play-off spot already secured, they are unlikely to put up much of a fight in Birmingham, as they have less at stake in this match.
Aston Villa vs Celtic Prediction
Aston Villa’s star-studded squad are expected to overcome Celtic, even if the match goes down to the wire. With everything to play for, Aston Villa will give it their all to secure a spot in the round of 16.
