Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the LaLiga match.
Atlético Madrid are enduring their worst start to the LaLiga since 2009 and sit in an unfamiliar 17th place. This is a chance for the hosts to halt the poor run and restore confidence, especially at home. Villarreal are already in the top three and will try to extend their unbeaten run.
Atlético Madrid
Atlético Madrid have recorded two draws and one defeat across three rounds, and the team have conceded in every match. The hosts lost to Espanyol (1:2), then were held to 1:1 draws by Elche and Athletic Bilbao. The attack has functioned reasonably well, though. The duo of Julián Álvarez and Alexander Sørloth have already scored once apiece. Atlético Madrid have also added Giacomo Raspadori, who registered two goals and two assists in 45 minutes across two matches for Italy.
Villarreal
Villarreal made a strong start: wins over Real Oviedo (2:0) and Girona (5:0), followed by a 1:1 draw away at Celta de Vigo. They have scored at least two goals in five of their last six LaLiga matches. Nicolas Pépé and Tajon Buchanan stand out with five goals between them. The squad has also been reinforced by top centre-forward Georges Mikautadze, who scored 12 times in 36 French Ligue 1 matches for Olympique Lyonnais. However, there are lapses at the back — in the last five head-to-head meetings with Atlético Madrid, both teams scored.
Atlético Madrid vs Villarreal Prediction
Atlético Madrid must chase the win at home, but the current form raises many questions. Villarreal are in strong attacking shape and are likely to trouble the hosts’ defence. The match should be open and productive — both clubs are expected to score.
